The commercial capital city of Colombo has rapidly developed into a multicultural epic centre in Asia, brimming with modern, exclusive hotels and boutique guest houses. The city has a rich heritage for visitors to explore, best achieved on one of the new open top buses. There are ancient ruins, colonial remains and the ultra-modern skyscrapers you would expect to find in a city of 5.6 million people. Attractions in Colombo include the Gangaramaya Temple, Viharamahadevi Park and the National Museum of Colombo. Tourists can travel to see the old lighthouse, Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque and the Portuguese built St Paul’s church. Galle Face Green is the elegant promenade and park popular with locals and tourists alike.

Beach holiday

The 1,330 km of coast line have some of the region’s most pristine beaches. Palm tree foreshores, clear azure waters and soft golden sands provide perfect conditions for beach fans. There are plenty of aquatic activities on offer too, with scuba diving on the many reefs, sandbars and secluded coves. Some of the busier and more captivating places are Tangalla, Mirissa and Bentota with five-star hotels and vibrant commercial districts. North of Colombo you will find the popular Negambo lagoon, famous for its seas and lobster menus. If you love sailing or watching whales and dolphins then Alankuda beach, in the north, is an ideal location for you.

Sri Lanka Safari

Elephant rides are the common image of a Sri Lankan expedition but you may also get to see wild boar, sloth bears, leopards and wild buffalo on your travels. The country has a large bird population of some 433 species and a diverse amount of creatures beneath the waves too. There are 15 protect parklands where the wildlife is cared for and allowed to live in harmony, one of the largest being the Willpattu National Park. There is also Yala where you stand the best chance of seeing leopards.

Historical Sri Lanka

People have been settling in Sri Lanka for over 3.000 years and all this activity has left some interesting landmarks. The landscape is littered with ancient ruins, palaces, temples and monasteries. Kandy, which has risen from the ashes on numerous occasions has 500 years of preserved history to visit. The oldest city of Anuradhapura is the island’s cultural centre where you can wander the ancient ruins and bell shaped temples, some of which date back to the 2nd century BC. The many tea plantations are an essential part of Sri Lanka’s long history and tours are possible, which show how the Ceylon teas are grown and processed.

The biodiversity and protected landscapes have ensured Sri Lanka is a well-known destination on the eco-tourists agenda. The encouragement of self-sustained crafts, low level intrusion and regulated tours have less impact on the environment, preserve specialist areas and conserve the natural way of life.
